🔹 JUST AN OBSERVATION
As you’ll know, I do enjoy a good rant now and then and I suspect that this opening piece would probably come under that heading. It’s an observation I have noticed over the years of doing this work with spirit. It started to grate with me several years ago and now resides in my head as an open sore!
It’s about the use of the word ‘serve’ when it comes to describing our work as mediums. Now I know that I’m splitting hairs when it comes to the actual meaning of the word, but that is not my issue. It’s the way that the word is often used by mediums to promote themselves as serving the spirit world, or serving the church when the truth is many of them are merely serving their own needs, desires and egos.
I have also observed that many of the more well-known mediums rarely use the phrase. It’s as if they are aware that the word is overused or over-stated in most cases. And the plain truth is, they don’t need to make the claim anyway. They have earned their reputation through education, demonstrations, teaching others, and continuing to improve their own abilities.
Has anyone in the spirit world ever asked anyone to ‘serve’ them? Probably not. The most important aspect of this work with spirit is the improvement of our own relationship with the spirit world and sharing the knowledge and evidence that life does indeed continue after earthly death.
It’s the connotation that we are ‘serving the church’ or ‘serving spirit’ is doing something above and beyond normal mediumship that bothers me. It’s the impression given that the person ‘serving’ is someone special on a calling.
I often wonder how many mediums there would be in the modern world if there weren’t a few shillings to be made doing so. But hey, that’s another topic for another day!
I am one medium that has never used the phrase, nor would ever use it to describe my public or private work with the spirit world. But of course, this is only my opinion and everyone is entitled to their own.

Yes, I’ve been using the same phrase in your mind to get your attention, so you know we’re ready. As you join us again this evening there are just three others here with us.
You do know that humans are social creatures? I’m being a bit sarky with you because Jane is correct when she worries about your recent lack of contact with others. Much of your learning will only come about through your social interactions. You’ve chosen a reclusive lifestyle recently and your life appears to be in front of those computers! You would benefit from some real interaction. Imagine if you chose that lifestyle in this world. You wouldn’t want to live long!
It is in the nature and design of humankind to be social creatures. Be careful that you don’t create a lifestyle of habits you’ll find difficult to leave when the time comes to. You are concerned that the world is a dangerous place. Well, it always has been. Nothing has really changed. Perhaps your focus is on that stuff too much.
The Divine powers are always at work and always for the greater good. You have nothing to fear, but fear itself, as someone once said.
How about returning to your cabinet again and letting us do more work with the speaking side of things? I know that you are always worried about this pen work being from us and not from your mind. Let me remind you, that is your trust weakening. Keep it strong. Pay attention to my actual voice for a moment or two.,
I want you to stop writing for a while as I talk to you. I will tell you when to start writing again.
| 5 MINUTES LATER
Ok, in those minutes alone in the discussion, did you learn more about me? In your summary notes, explain what I asked of you and how it felt and sounded. The exercise was a simple trick to clarify our connection.
We know how down you’ve been again over the past week or so, and we know how you snapped yourself out of it quickly too. This is a wonderful quality you have in your make-up. Remember that things are never as bad as you allow your mind to think they are. And we are always here to talk. Time to close this session now.
Good night my friend.
| ORIGINAL NOTES
🚩 AFTERTHOUGHTS
If you’ve opened the original notes from the PDF above, you’ll have noticed some additional notes I wrote at the end of the main session. This is what I wrote:
During the couple of minutes of being told to stop writing, I was instructed to make effort to listen to the speaker’s voice.
I was asked to imagine what the speaker looked like. I focused on the sound, the pronunciation and the delivery of his words. Yes it did act like a recharge of the connection.
I thought that was a clever little exercise.
I’ve redesigned the graphics used at this point in the hope of making the depth of the connection with the spirit world clear to see. As always, bear in mind that this is my judgement and was made several weeks after the original notes were written.

The spirit speaker is repeating concerns that my partner Jane had been recently talking to me about. Yes, the writing work that I do does mean I spend a lot of time in the office. But I have always been comfortable with my own presence. However, I would perhaps agree that getting out and about has been something I’ve not wanted to do in recent times. I’m one of those that is happy-discontent!
Since this session was written, I have returned to my cabinet in the sanctuary a lot more and have recorded several spoken versions, which will be released soon.
The interjection with the spirit speaker asking me to stop writing and just listen was quite different. I have come to appreciate that when it is necessary and deemed important enough, the spirit helpers will come forward and make their presence stronger. The challenge, of course, is with us accepting their subtle signs.
If you’ve any thoughts you’d like to share about either the opening article or the written session, please do leave your comments below. I do respond to all of them.
WORDS FROM SPIRIT-INSPIRED WRITING 44
Hi Trevor,
Interesting observation and assessment of the word serve. When I first started developing as a medium my guides just warned me against not including both sides in how it works. Some people let their own ego's get in the way and think they are something special. So not everyone can be a medium you have to have special powers like you belong to an elite group only !!!
Don't lose your credibility by acting like some spooky strange person who has lost the plot on reality either by over sharing or trying to convert people who aren't ready to accept any spiritual teachings yet or ever !!!
That we don't put the spirit side on a massive pedestal and we serve them which also isn't what they desire.
You need to balance everything in your mind as this relationship takes both sides to make it work.
So they told me to think of it as a team effort for both sides have to learn how to make the communication work out in the optimum conditions.
I always thank spirit for working with me in whatever capacity. I always thank the recipient after a message too. After a devine service I always stress that it takes effort on both sides to make it work along with the recipients of the messages. A triangle 🔺️ of spirit, medium, and recipients otherwise how can the messages ever be validated ??
I think the recipients value being included in the process and will return again and again to church or a private reading knowing their loved ones want to communicate with them out of love and family bonds.
However not all mediums end their services in similar ways it's an individual thing.
Thank you for raising the point it is a good one to debate and find out how others feel.
I’ve never said I “serve” Spirit, I always say I work ‘with’ Spirit.
Equally, I never refer to ‘my guides’, they are my friends and Co-workers.
All we do with Spirit, is done in partnership. They do not guide us. We have free will. They do assist us, when asked and they can inspire us in much the same way as our friends and family here inspire us.
Thank you for this thought provoking article, Trevor.
Ps yes, you should get out more and take your lovely Jane with you.
