There are so many facets of this work we do with Spirit, many of which I’m fascinated with and love to learn more about. Inspired & Automatic Writing is one such subject of interest. As I’ve grown older I’ve enjoyed exploring my creative side a little more. I think probably because I have more time to do so and working with The Spirited Talk Foundation every day keeps that creative side of me awake even more. I guess you could say that it’s closely associated with my lifestyle, since retiring from a ‘normal’ job.
One of the greatest lessons I have learnt recently is that this world of communication with another world is not something that is fixed to rules and methods. Everyone of us have different abilities, methods and experiences. There are no textbook answers that we should all follow. That was pressed home recently when I was brave and showed a guest a quick drawing I’d done before sitting with her.
In itself, the drawing is naff! Lynn Cottrell is a spirit artist that I admire and her work is truly incredible. During an interview with her a year or two ago, she made it clear that when she set out with her art several decades ago, she was rubbish at it. But she kept doing it anyway!
In taking this approach Lynn has developed an amazing relationship with her spirit team and those beyond that are now working with her in her work. It has now developed to a level where world famous artists in the spirit world now work through her. She told me the names of a couple of these artists and I was blown aside, but I agreed that sharing these names with others would often lead to the listener having some doubts in the credibility of the process.
The lesson I got from listening to Lynn was that each of us can draw, no matter how good or bad we believe it to be. And because this is something I can do in my world, away from the critical eyes of others, I can do it in my own time and get some enjoyment from it. Anyway, back to the point - I had this interview with a well respected UK and international medium recently. Before she arrived at my studio I did my usual tarot reading for when she arrived. There were a few minutes spare and for whatever reason I drew the following childish picture.
I thought no more of it, other than it was me doodling. It was later in the interview when my guest was describing an old school teacher from her childhood that I began to wonder about my drawing. Rather than break the flow of the interview at that point, I left it until the end of the interview before I showed my guest this drawing.
I apologised for it’s simplicity and dismissed it as possible nonsense while asking whether she knew somebody that looked like this. Without hesitation, she responded positively and declared that it was her old school teacher. He had hair like this man in my drawing. He had a moustache the same, beady eyes, stubble and a rounded head. She said the drawing was a very good likeness of him.
Of course, I was gobsmacked! Later in the day when my guest had left and I was churning over the events of the day in my mind, I considered how important Lynn Cottrell’s words had been about never dismissing the drawings we do, no matter how bad they appear to be to us. This event inspired me to continue with my own creativity, and perhaps channel it into my love of writing (or typing as it really should be called these days!)
| THE DEVICE I MAINLY USE
Back in 2020 I decided to invest some money into a gadget that I’d always wanted - that is an e-ink notebook. They’re rather expensive and there were a few more choices coming available. So I did my research and settled for an Onyx Boox Nova 3, the 7” model. Costing several hundreds of pounds I was determined to make use of it and over the following weeks and months converted to using this device for all of my note taking.
It’s different than a tablet and feels more natural to write on. The stylus is more pen-like than most tablet styluses and being e-ink the battery lasts days instead of hours. It has an internet connection and everything is automatically synced to a cloud account. It has built in OCR (optical character recognition) and convert to PDF functions.
Without turning this post into a review, just trust me, this is a wonderful device if you enjoy writing or drawing. The stylus sensitivity levels, the feel, the lack of latency, the convenience etc. make this one of my favourite gadgets that I carry everywhere now.
| THE INSPIRED WRITING
Wouldn’t it be romantic for me to be able to state here that I had a message from the spirit world suggesting I start doing inspired writing! Sadly that’s not the case, well I don’t think it was anyway!
How it began was more random than that. My work schedule these days affects my sleeping routine. Every night in bed when her nibs has fallen asleep, I get my little light out and, propped up with my elbows and pillows, I read under the covers. This often makes me tired and after a few pages, I feel inclined to go to sleep. But this one night I was wide awake. Normally, when I read, I have my notebook (the one I described earlier) open alongside the book for copying lines I like and making notes.
This particular night, I didn’t want to read any more and decided to write in my fancy notebook instead. “But what can I write about?”, I thought.
“Let us talk through you.”
“What? That was my thoughts from my imagination!” I said to myself.
But I couldn’t dismiss the notion. In doing so, I would be dismissing the Spirit world, if it was even remotely them! Anyway, how could I write anything that didn’t first have to come from my mind, my own imagination?
But I’m an educated medium that works with the Spirit world every day of my life, and the one secret about this mental mediumship, that’s not actually a secret, is that the medium (tool) the spirit world use to communicate with us is - yep - our minds. It is through our imagination that they can and will communicate with us. If there’s a skill, it’s in defining what is truly your own imagination from what was placed there by Spirit.
There are some simple techniques to recognising what is inspired and what is our imagination. For this article, I’ll just say that I’ve learnt how to tell the difference a lot more clearly than in my early days. I have more experience and more understanding these days.
So there I was! It was 2:00am and I was not yet tired enough to sleep yet. (This is what happens when you have an hour long powernap in the late afternoon!) In my subdued mind, I wondered if I could write something in an inspired style.
I created a new digital notebook, set the lines template, set the pen nib choice from the tools option on screen and started writing. Everything you read after this opening introduction is an exact verbatim. I will include a screen shot of the actual pages for evidence.
Whether what you read is truly the word of spirit is something only you can decide for yourself. Me - I’m going with the flow! I feel that most of these messages are flavoured with my vocabulary and grammar, after all, it is through my mind and my abilities the words are produced.
At this stage, as I write this introduction for you, I’m only a few weeks into the process. It has become part of my nightly routine. I’m still honing the technique of writing without too much personal thought. My belief is that the sentiment and actual message of these communications is indeed inspired by my spirit team. Hands on heart - I make every effort not to add words that aren’t part of the message. I do sometimes have to reword sentences because during the process I immediately forget what it was they said to me that few seconds ago and have to make up my own way of saying what it was they said.
| FINALLY, WHY ON SUBSTACK
I had a conversation with my Spirit team, as you will read in a few weeks, where I asked whether I should make this work public. Their approval was loud and clear. My choices were to perhaps include the notes in an email newsletter produced by me. I dismissed that idea, based on the statistics I have on previously sent emails and the amount that the recipient reads. I then considered whether to add these notes to a blog within the Spirit Talk Foundation website. Again, I dismissed it because viewing figures of previous text posts is quite low.
I believed I had to find a bigger audience - one where people actually read stuff. I needed a new audience - away from the little group of inactive people in our Facebook group. I’d researched the ‘Substack’ platform some months ago and decided I liked its simplicity. Not too many bells and whistles, a simple format for writers, and a potential of bigger audiences.
So that is why this publication is here - for your reading pleasure. The platform would like me to encourage many subscribers and perhaps consider a fee for those to read this blog. I’m not at that stage of thinking yet. Yes I want the overall message of this blog to go wider afield, but for now, I’m happy to just spread the word about my work, the Spirited Talk Foundation, and my life working with Spirit.
